Typology Skincare Routine for Oily Skin (AE+)

Typology products for oily skin

The products mentioned in this post were gifted by Typology

Typology is a vegan and cruelty-free skincare company in France. They focus on natural active ingredients, sourced from sustainable farms, that are pared back to the essentials.

The care for the environment is reflected in their packaging too, with recycled plastic and glass used for bottles, and recyclable aluminium for tubes.

Typology were kind enough to gift me a skincare set to review that was tailored to suit my skin type.

My Typology Skin Type

I started my journey with Typology by taking a skin assessment that identified me as a type AE+ – which means I produce more sebum than most, leaving me with oily skin. This can cause spots and having remaining darker marks from previous blemishes. In the quiz, I identified redness, shine and pimples as points of concern for my skin.

With this skin type in mind, Typology created a full AM and PM routine using their products.

I have been using these recommended products morning and evening for the past few weeks.

Typology Morning Routine for Oily (AE+) Skin

Typology nettle soap

Purifying Cleansing Bar with Nettle

I start my morning off with the purifying cleansing bar. Usually, I would avoid bar soaps for my face, but I really enjoy using this one.

It has a nice natural scent and it does a good job of cleaning my face. I usually wake up with quite oily skin, which is often made more noticeable by the remnants of the previous night’s thicker moisturiser or sleeping mask. This cleansing bar is great at refreshing the skin and giving you a clean slate for the day ahead!

There are loads of great ingredients in this that are great for oily and combination skin. It does contain a lot of essential oils, so if you’re sensitive to those, then it’s best to avoid.

  • Nettle powder: rebalances oily skin
  • Eucalyptus oil: regulates sebum production and reduces size of sebaceous glands
  • Spearmint oil: repairs and promotes healing of damaged skin
  • Olive oil: calms redness
  • Coconut oil: soothes and nourishes
  • Sunflower oil: softens and nourishes
  • Shea butter: repairs and soothes

typology toner

Unifying Toner – 7% Niacinamide

I follow up the cleansing bar with the Unifying Toner. It does a great job of softening my skin and preparing it for the following skincare steps.

The Unifying Toner aims to rebalance the skin’s pH making it healthier. With 7% niacinamide, the toner helps to reduce redness and imperfections.

azelaic serum

Mattifying Serum – 10% Azelaic Acid

Next I use the Mattifying Serum, which contains 10% Azelaic Acid, which has been extracted from organic bamboo. This serum helps to reduce excess sebum and mattify oily skin. My skin is noticeably less shiny when using this!

typology bamboo cream

Purifying Moisturiser – 4% Zinc PCA + Bamboo Extract

The Purifying Moisturiser is one of my favourite products from this routine. It is a light moisturiser suited to oily skin types and aims to reduce excess sebum and fight breakouts.

It contains 4% zinc which helps to reduce sebum production and offers antibacterial properties. The bamboo extract absorbs excess sebum to reduce the appearance of oiliness and shine.

I love this cream, it’s perfect for my oily skin as it sinks in quickly and provides a mattifying effect.

Typology Evening Routine for Oily (AE+) Skin

typology micellar

7-Ingredient Micellar Water

I start my evening routine with the 7-Ingredient Micellar Water, which helps to get the cleansing process started by removing my makeup.

Ordinarily, I wouldn’t use micellar water, but this is by far the best micellar I have ever used and it actually does a really good job of getting my skin clean. When I use the micellar water it leaves no traces of makeup behind.

The product really does only contain seven ingredients, which are:

  1. Purified water – a natural solvent to hold the other ingredients.
  2. Glycerin – from rapeseed and sunflower, moisturises the outer skin.
  3. Poloxamer 184 – surfactant that removes makeup particle.
  4. Pentylene glycol – from cane sugar, moisturises and keeps formula stable.
  5. Citric acid – from corn, regulates the pH to avoid irritation.
  6. Sodium hydroxide – regulates the pH of the product.
  7. Cetrimonium bromide – preservative that stops bacteria developing in the product.

To double cleanse and ensure my skin is properly clean, I use the Purifying Cleansing Bar again in the evening.

It provides a deeper clean for my skin and leaves it very soft and prepared for the next steps.

unifying toner

Unifying Toner – 7% Niacinamide

On days when I have worn more makeup, I will follow the cleanser with the Unifying Toner. It makes sure the skin is clean, as well as softening it and priming it for the following skincare products.

typology serums

Unifying Serum – 12% Niacinamide

Some of my skincare concerns are redness (from genetics), dark patches (from old spots) and milia. This niacinamide serum aims to reduce redness, brighten skin and improve the texture, which helps to tackle each of these issues.

In the weeks that I’ve been using this I’ve noticed a definite improvement in all of these areas. My blemishes have faded a lot and my milia has reduced a lot.

Targeted Blemish Serum – 2% Salicylic Acid + 1% Zinc

When I do get spots, I use this targeted blemish serum to help combat them. As it is a higher strength serum (2% salicylic), you only need to apply the serum to problem areas, not the whole face.

I got a couple of breakouts during my trial of these products, but using this serum cleared them up so quickly!

Purifying Night Serum – Botanical Blend with Peony

The last product recommended for the evening routine is the Purifying Night Serum. The overnight oil contains peony, jojoba and tea tree oil, which work together to purify and regenerate the skin as you sleep.

I love using this as a facial massage oil with my gua sha before bed. It helps to relax me and also aids the absorption of the oil. Despite being an oil, it actually absorbs really well and rather quickly, and doesn’t leave me looking shiny or greasy.

Since using these products, my skin looks the best it has in months! It is clear, fresh and glowing every day. I’m so grateful to Typology for sending over these products to try. I will use all of these until they are finished and will consider rebuying some of these in the future!
