8 Best Autumn Lipstick Shades

selection of lipsticks for autumn

As leaves turn from green to brown and we begin to experience an overwhelming urge to make everything taste like pumpkin, it’s time to bring autumnal hints into our makeup and wardrobe.

I really love lipsticks and rarely leave the house without one on. During the spring and summer, I pretty much only dip into my pink shades and glosses, as I feel they suit the season. But as my wardrobe switches to browns, oranges and purple shades for the autumn, I like to reach for deeper tones and colours better suited to fall.

So here I share my eight favourite lipsticks that I’ll be using over the autumn season! I’ve ordered them by colour – from lightest shade to darkest – rather than any form of recommendation.

Below I explain why I have chosen these eight shades to highlight for wear during autumn!

(also let’s just ignore the fact that I have tiny lips and will clearly never be a lipstick model haha!)

wearing revolution pro supreme lipstick in shade incite

Revolution Pro Supreme Lipstick – Incite

I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of Revolution makeup normally. I know some love it as it is so cheap, but I can never seem to get along with the pigment (or lack thereof) in their products. However, when it comes to their Pro Supreme range, I am in love.

I have quite a lot of the lipsticks from this range and they are amongst my faves for daily use. They’re really cheap (£5 each, often on 3 for 2 deals) and apply really easily. They come in both matte and gloss formulas, and the Incite shade is matte, and one of my absolute favourites!

Revolution describe the shade ‘Incite’ as a “terracotta matte” – it’s like a perfect mix of pink, orange and brown tones that makes it one to be used all year round – although I think it is particularly perfect for autumn.

Incite is long-lasting, with a good colour and is matte without being drying. This is the lipstick I carry round with me in my handbag most days.

wearing shade Gemini

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipstick – Gemini

I didn’t know whether to include this one or not, but it is one I use regularly, and it is one of my fave shades for autumn. I bought Jeffree Star Cosmetics after the products were recommended to me a few years ago, and at the time I had never watched any of Jeffree’s videos and didn’t really know anything about him at all.

It is unlikely I will support him in the future, due to his actions, but I can’t deny that his liquid lip formula isn’t incredible. Gemini is one of my favourite lipstick shades from his line. It’s another terracotta nude shade, which is matte, without being too drying. I find this to be really long-lasting, and I can easily go most of the day without needing to re-apply. The Gemini lipstick costs £16.

Gosh Velvet Touch Lipstick – 154 Burgundy

Gosh lipsticks are the reason I fell in love with makeup – they are affordable, super long-lasting and bold – and when I first discovered them, I needed them all. I honestly have about 20 different shades of Gosh lipstick, but I think that 154 Burgundy is one of the best options for autumn!

This is a regular lipstick (non-matte), so you can expect a little shine to this shade. It’s a rich burgundy colour with orange undertones, making it an orangey-red shade that I think is perfect for the autumn months. Gosh lipsticks are £7.99 and often 3 for 2 at Superdrug.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream – Copenhagen

When the weather gets colder and windier our lips can get super dry and cracked, and adding a matte lipstick on top can make this worse. Matte lipstick on cracked lips is also not a look. That’s where this NYX lip cream comes into play!

While looking matte, it is actually really soft and creamy and doesn’t dry out your lips at all. It has great colour payoff and lasts a long time. Copenhagen is a lovely light burgundy colour, with more reddish tones, which is a great match for a lot of my autumnal wear. The NYX lip cream lipsticks are £6 each.

Gosh Velvet Touch Lipstick – 015 Grape

Another autumnal contender from Gosh is the shade 015 Grape. Unlike the 154 Burgundy shade, this lipstick is matte, and offers a really long-lasting effect. It is easy to apply and has a rich colour payoff. It is such a bold, purpley-red, grape-like colour that is ideal for adding some autumnal colour to your makeup routine.

For a richer purple-burgundy tone, try 014 Cranberry too – which is my all time fave lipstick from Gosh. These lipsticks are £7.99 each, but often available as part of a 3 for 2 deal at Superdrug.

The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid – Mauritius Dahlia

One of the biggest benefits of this lipstick is the scent – I don’t know what it is, but I think it smells lovely! Similar to the NYX lipstick, this offering from The Body Shop is super creamy and doesn’t leave you with dry lips, despite being matte.

This shade is another great red-burgundy option, and it is very easy to apply with a creamy formula. The Body Shop Matte Lip Liquid costs £7.

sleek velvet slipper

Sleek Matte Me Liquid Lip – Velvet Slipper

If you want a shade that does not budge, this is it! After taking pictures for this blog post I had to SCRUB my arms and lips to get this shade to come off and it just would not go. I have worn this liquid lip on nights out and to meals and it lasts so well.

The only issue with this one is that it’s prone to being a typical matte liquid lip, that can make your lips look chapped and dry. It also dries quickly and so you need to be careful with application, otherwise you can end up with ‘tide-lines’ around parts of your lips.

Despite this, it is still an excellent liquid lip choice that I would recommend. Velvet Slipper is a deep purple-mauve colour that tends to dry a little darker than it looks in the packaging. Plus, this is the cheapest on my list, at £4.99, making it an absolute bargain.

Tarte Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lipstick – Killin’ It

Tarte is one of my faves for liquid lipstick, they last ages, they’re easy to apply and come in a range of shades that are perfect for day-to-day and evening wear. The shade Killin’ It is described as being a ‘berry’ shade by Tarte themselves.

It’s a deeper shade than I normally wear, but in the autumn I tend to wear burgundy and brown, which suits this colour more. If you like darker lipsticks then I really love this one as it doesn’t crack or fade like many other deeper lipsticks do over the day.
